DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College volleyball team dropped its 2008 season finale with a 3-0 decision against Stevenson at Wentworth Gymnasium in Capital Athletic Conference action.
Set scores were 25-18, 25-14 and 26-24.
In the first set, Wesley jumped ahead 7-1 after a block by Nettie Choice and Erin Helmick. After the Mustangs called a timeout, they ran off a 7-1 run of their own to knot things at 8-8. The two teams continued to trade points until Stevenson broke an 11-11 tie and pulled away for the win.
The Mustangs continued that momentum in the second set, jumping ahead 18-8 to take command and cruise for a 2-0 advantage.
Wesley battled back in the third set. The Wolverines forced ties at 11-11 and 14-14 before Stevenson appeared to take control with a three straight points. Wesley pulled back to within two at 22-20 after a ball handling error on Stevenson.
The set ended up tied after a Mustang attack error left the score 22-22. Wesley took a 23-22 lead on a kill by Lilia Brekke. Stevenson held tough and after the longest rally of the night forced a Wolverine error to tie it at 23-23. After falling behind 24-23, Michele Day picked up a kill to tie things up but the Mustangs regrouped to take the next two points and the match.
Brekke and Sophie Reed had eight kills and 10 digs apiece to lead Wesley. Reed added 11 assists, while Brekke served up a pair of aces.
The loss ends the Wesley season. The Wolverines 11 wins tied the school record in the program's third season.
