Wesley Pushes Frostburg to Four Sets

DOVER, Del. - Wesley College pushed defending Capital Athletic Conference champion Frostburg State to four sets before falling 3-1 in volleyball action.

The Wolverines took a 21-20 lead in the first set behind a pair of services by Carle Ax (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) during a four point run that erased a 20-17 deficit.  The Bobcats, however, regrouped and claimed a 25-23 win in the set.

Wesley appeared to be on the ropes after Frostburg State dismantled the Wolverines 25-9 in the second set, but Wesley battled back in the third set with the match on the line. Trailing 21-14, the Wolverines rattled off nine straight points, including two aces by Kristen Roberts (Loveland, Colo./Middletown (Del.)) to take a 23-21 lead and went on to send things to a fourth set with a 25-22 victory.

Frostburg State bounced back in the fourth set with a 25-14 win to take the match.

Ax had a stellar all around effort for Wesley with nine kills, 16 assists, four aces, 11 digs and two blocks.  Jessica Taylor (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) had a team-high 10 kills.  Cristina Maruffo (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington) added 12 assists.  Jacquelle Boone (New Plymouth, Idaho/Gem State Academy) and Taylor had three blocks apiece.

Amber Winterling led the Bobcats with 16 kills, while Sabrina Winterling added 15.  Andrea Armstrong had 16 digs and served up eight aces in the match. 

Wesley hosts Salisbury on October 11.
