2013 Volleyball Season Preview

2013 Volleyball Season Preview

The 2013 edition of the Wesley College volleyball team features an extremely deep roster where each player will see valuable playing time.  Leading head coach Juli Greep's squad will be sophomore Meghan Marshall in the back row as well as senior middle hitter and co-captain Lindsay DiMuzio.  A talented group of newcomers, including junior libero/defensive specialist Rachel Hausler, should help the Wolverines improve from a season ago. Greep also added Bel Fakaosi, a two-year standout at Delaware State who led the MEAC in assists in 2012, to the coaching staff.

Wesley lost its all-time leader in assists, Cristina Marruffo, to graduation, but Greep brought in a pair of first-year setters to go along with sophomore Samantha Weber in hopes to replace the four-year starter. Ashley Klein, a freshman out of Severn, Md., helped Old Mill to the State Playoffs in each of her final two seasons and averaged nearly 30 assists a match.  Klein should also see some time on the right side and can play any position on the floor.  A local product out of Bear, Del., Beth Schlecker has been a big surprise for Greep early this preseason.  Described as extremely coachable and a terrific leader for a freshman, Schlecker could very well be the Wolverines primary setter this season. Weber will see most of her time as a serving specialist and is also good in the back row, recording over 34 digs last year.

Outside Hitters

Senior co-captain Sharis Allen was one of three players with over 100 kills a year ago and should start on the outside in 2013.  A powerhouse athlete, Allen will also serve as a mentor to freshman Arnelle Akakpo (Rahway, N.J.) who possesses a lot of the same qualities. Celte Weaver, who will play mostly on the right side, also returns for her sophomore season after registering 19 kills as a freshman.

Middle Hitters and Blockers

DiMuzio has been Wesley's best hitter out of the middle the last couple years and has been taking advantage of being a leader on this team. A very positive influence on the squad, DiMuzio led the Wolverines with 155 kills in 2012, while finishing second in blocks and third in digs. Tatum Jones had a solid freshman season with 75 kills and over 30 blocks and mixes the ball very well out of the middle.

Liberos/Defensive Specialists

With Marshall, Hausler and Ashley Pierce on the squad, the back row is definitely the strength of Wesley's team in 2013.  Marshall recorded a Wesley-record 434 digs in 2013 and is arguably one of the top players in the Capital Athletic Conference. Also a terrific passer, Marshall is also a tremendous leader on the team.  Hausler played the last two years at the College of St. Elizabeth and led the Screaming Eagles in digs both years, as well as their two best seasons in program-history. A native of Califon, N.J., Hausler also has a good swing out of the back row. Pierce finished second to Marshall a year ago in digs with 183, and continues to get better with her serve and attacking skills.
