DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's volleyball team dropped its home opener to Goucher, 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-22) on Tuesday night at Wentworth Gymnasium. The loss drops the Wolverines to 6-2 on the season while the Gophers move to 4-5.
Freshman Tania Rounds led Wesley with nine kills on just 22 swings with four errors to hit an impressive .227 on the night, while classmate Jessica Tynes hit .167 on seven kills in 18 attempts but 26 attacking errors led to Goucher's victory.
The Navy & White also got six kills from Tatum Jones and five from Tionne Graves-Brown while Codi Ziolkowski quarterbacked the offense with a season and match-high 20 assists. Beth Schlecker also assisted on 11 kills.
Defensively, Wesley was led once again by Meghan Marshall's match-high 18 digs while Rounds tallied a pair of blocks.
Goucher led from nearly start to finish before the Wolverines really poured it on in the deciding set. Wesley got out to a 4-0 lead as Ziolkowski recorded a pair of aces while assisting on kills by Tynes and Kadijah Doughty. Unfortunately the Gophers bounced right back with four-straight points and neither team led by more than two points until the very end.
A kill by Jones gave Wesley its final lead of the match at 22-21 but following a Goucher timeout, the Gophers scored four-straight to close out the match.
Rosemont travels to Wesley on Thursday, September 11 for a 7 pm start.
