Wesley Clipped by No. 13 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Wesley College Volleyball team looked toward Wednesday night's match as an opportunity to knock off a national power, but could not overcome the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains as they fell 3-0.

Tionne Graves-Brown led the team with six kills and seven digs on the night while Beth Schlecker dished off six assists and Lindsay Burg passed out five. Graves-Brown split the Wolverines only block on the night with Codi Ziolkowski

Wesley got off to a slow start, scoring just eight points in the first game on a -.160 attacking percentage. Christopher Newport tallied 14 kills and just two errors on 26 swings in the first game for a 25-8 win.

In the second stanza, the Wolverines hit much better, attacking at a .217 clip. The squad trailed by just two points through the first half of the game, pushing the Captains to a 13-11 advantage, but CNU pulled away by finishing the game on a 12-5 run for a 25-16 victory.

In the third, the Wolverines scratched and clawed to stay with the No. 13 team in the nation, battling them tooth and nail. Wesley trailed 18-11 at one point, but pushed themselves on an 8-3 run to draw within three points. The Captains held off the surging Wolverines to earn a 25-21 victory and a 3-0 sweep.

Wesley moves to 9-10 on the season and will travel to Mary Washington on Friday, October 7.
