Gerry Szabo completed his third season as the Wesley College volleyball head coach in the fall of 2010, lending stability to a young program that had a different head coach in each of its first three seasons.
During 2009, the fourth year program fielded its first four-year seniors. The duo, Lilia Brekke and Nettie Choice, were the only players on the roster who were not either freshmen or sophomores. The volume of youth and a very competitive schedule resulted in just eight wins as Coach Szabo attempts to build the program.
His 2008 team featured no seniors and just a pair of
juniors, but tied a school record with 11 wins in the program's
third season.
Becoming the third head coach in Wolverine history marked a return
to the area for Szabo, who came to Wesley after stints at Salem
International (W. Va.) and Glenville State, both of the NCAA
Division II West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(WVIAC).
Prior to his stints in the WVIAC, Szabo racked up over 300 wins in
the First State. From 1976-82, he posted a 259-31 mark as the head
coach at Wilmington College. Szabo was also the first head coach at
Goldey-Beacom, going 43-26 during the program's first two
seasons.
In between, Szabo had a very successful run at Cabrini in Radnor,
Pennsylvania. He coached there from 1982-91 with his women going
268-41 and winning seven conference titles.
Szabo has also served as the head volleyball coach at Delaware
Tech, Padua Academy and John Dickinson High School.
In addition to his success on the volleyball court, Szabo has
coached softball as well. At Goldey-Beacom, his teams won seven
NAIA District or Northeast Regional Championships in 10 years.
Coach Szabo has been named coach of the year 24 times in five
different sports at the college and high school Level. Most
recently: 1995, 1997, and 2000 NAIA Northeast Independent College
Softball Coach of the Year and 1997 Delaware State High School
Volleyball Coach of the Year.
He graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in
Education and owns a master's degree from LaSalle University.
