DOVER, Del. – Sporting some new uniforms, the Wesley College bats came alive in a 10-4 victory over Arcadia on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Reed Field. The Wolverines improve to 16-11 on the season while the Knights fall to 17-9-1.
Trevor Mears and Cory Smith both connected for three hits on the day while Mears drove in three runs and Smith a pair. Wesley tallied 11 hits on the day and also got multi-hit performances from Conner Gobright and Sam Farnell.
Arcadia took a 1-0 lead after its half of the first on a wild pitch from Anthony Coniglio but Wesley got him off the hook with a run in its half of the first on a RBI single by Mears. Scoring on the play was Jon Carlson who was hit by a pitch and later stole second.
A scoreless second kept the game tied before the Knights tallied three runs on three hits in the third. Once again the Wolverines were quick to respond, this time erupting for six runs to take a 7-4 lead. Back-to-back singles by Smith and Mears drove in runs before a shot by Corey Jefferson off the pitcher allowed Carlson to score, giving the Wolverines a 5-4 lead.
Steve Perone was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Morgan Rupp drew a walk followed by an RBI single by Gobright and a sacrifice fly by Farnell. Wesley added another run in the fourth on ground ball from Perone and two more in the fifth on RBI hits by Smith and Mears.
Andrew Cooper relieved Coniglio to start the fourth and threw the next four innings, allowing just three hits while striking out one to improve to 3-1 on the year. Ben Patti retired the side in the next two innings and gave up just two hits to seal the win.
The Wolverines return to action on Thursday, April 11, when they travel to take on No. 25 Shenandoah in a 4 pm start.
