Baseball Edged In Season Opener

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Zach Stuart allowed just one run over six innings and the Wesley College baseball team outhit Moravian, 7-6, but the Wolverines dropped their season opener, 1-0 to the Greyhounds on Friday morning at Ty Cobb Ballpark in the opener of the Floyd Wilcox Tournament.

Moravian's lone run came in the fifth inning as Stuart hit the leadoff batter and allowed a pair of singles later in the inning.

Matt Domian and Eric Speidel had two hits apiece for Wesley while Trevor Mears, Adam Darling and Stan Zulkowski each had one.

Following Stuart's outing in which he allowed just five hits and a walk while fanning three, newcomers Sagar Patel and Connor Springsteen both tossed scoreless innings.

Wesley's best chance to score came in the first and seventh innings as it got a runner just 90 feet away.  In the opening frame, Cory Smith walked, reached second on a groundout by Mears and stole third but was stranded. Speidel was left at third after leading off the seventh with a double and advancing to third on a groundout. Seven Wolverines were stranded on the day.

Rob Solano picked up the win for the Greyhounds with seven strikeouts over seven innings.  Chris Soltys earned the save by tossing the final two innings without allowing a run.

The Wolverines return to action tomorrow when they take on Keystone.
