SALISBURY, Md. – Wesley College's baseball team fell to No. 3 Salisbury, 5-4, in 11 innings in the First Round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at SU Baseball Field. The fifth-seeded Wolverines fall to 10-17 and will take on sixth-seeded Christopher Newport in an elimination game on Thursday, April 16 at 9 am.
The Sea Gulls scored the game-winner off relief pitcher Connor Springsteen on an RBI single by Alex Lipman. Scoring on the play was Kyle Hayman who walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second as Jordan Gowe was intentionally walked with one out. Springsteen nearly escaped the jam, getting Bobby Sanzone to flyout just prior to Lipman.
Wesley at one point held a 3-0 lead after scoring three runs on four hits in the second inning. Matt Domian singled to lead off the inning and was sacrificed over by Mike Calvarese. KeAndre Jones then singled in Domian which was followed up by an RBI triple by Conner Gobright. Joe Hummel then plated Gobright for the third run with a single to center field.
Starting pitcher Eric Willey was cruising early on until Salisbury broke through with two runs in the seventh. The Wolverines were able to get one of those runs back in the eighth on an RBI single by Jones but the Sea Gulls evened it up with two runs in the ninth.
Willey started the ninth for the Navy & White and the leadoff man reached on an error which was followed by an infield single. After a sac bunt, Hayman was walked to load the bases and Pete Grasso was then plunked to cut the Wesley lead to 4-3.
Springsteen then relieved Willey after 8.1 innings, and Gowe drew a free pass to tie the score.
