ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Wesley College Baseball team began their Capital Athletic Conference schedule on the right foot Wednesday, cruising to an 11-3 victory over St. Mary's College in Southern Maryland.
Ron Morello finished with a team-high four RBI and was just a home run short of the cycle as the Wolverines took care of the Seahawks. Cody Simet earned his third win of the season, tossing six innings and allowing just one earned run on five scattered hits. He struck out four as well. Andrew Weaver finished out the game with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit a striking out two.
Wesley jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, allowing Simet to relax before he even toed the rubber. The Wolverines strung together five hits, including a three-run triple from Morello to create the early cushion. St. Mary's countered with a run in the bottom of the frame.
From that point, both teams went scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Wesley added three more to their total. Mike Calvarese, Morello, and Joe Hummel each recorded RBI in the inning, giving Wesley a 9-1 lead.
The Navy and White scored two more runs, one each in the sixth and seventh innings, and allowed St. Mary's a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Simet and Weaver combined to shut down the Seahawk bats and guide Wesley to the CAC victory.
The Wolverines improve to 7-4 on the season and will travel to York, Pa. to take on the Spartans in their first CAC doubleheader of the year on Saturday, March 12.
