DOVER, Del. - The 2017 Wesley College baseball team plans to carry on the focus from the 2016 season. "Our goal this year and every year is to make it to the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament," Sixth-year head coach Bret Underwood said.

The team is looking to continue its nine-year run of qualifying for the CAC Championship Tournament. The Wolverines finished 2016 with a 20-17 overall record and an 11-7 record in the CAC.

Underwood plans to keep his team focused and be mentally prepared for each game.  "Almost every team has made it to the playoffs in our league. That just shows how talented this conference is.  It's very difficult to play in our league and to expect to win games".

The Wolverines are going to be leaning on the leadership from their senior captains, Trey Mears and Mike Calvarese.  Last season, Mears was named to the All-CAC Second Team. Mears batted .333 while recording 54 hits, driving in 36 runs and scoring 36 runs. Mears also led the CAC last season in stolen bases with 31 on the year. Calvarese knocked 47 hits and tallied 25 RBI's in 2016.

Coach Underwood praised players like junior Chris Bramble and sophomore Will Barton.  "Both players are ready to make a jump and are prepared and ready to handle higher expectations," Says Underwood.

Another player looking to repeat his success from last year is junior Chris Seibert. Seibert led the Wolverines with eight homers and 45 runs batted in.

Juniors Sam Meck, Cody Simet and Alex Marrs will led the pitching staff in 2017. Meck and Simet each notched five wins in 2016 while Marrs is looking to transition into being a starter for 2017.

The Wolverine baseball team opened the season with a 34-1 win on Thursday over the Valley Forge Patriots. The Wolverines will be back in action Saturday at 10 a.m. when then they host Norwich Cadets in a doubleheader.
