Wesley outlasts Marymount to advance in CAC Tournament

SALISBURY, Md. – The fourth-seeded Wesley College baseball team scored an 8-7 victory over the fifth-seeded Marymount (Va.) Saints on Thursday in the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship Tournament.

Wesley plated the opening run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning when Trey Mears brought home Will Barton on a RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Marymount tied up the game in the third when Marlon Mitchell scored on a throwing error.

Wesley answered with two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take the 7-1 lead. After a leadoff double by Mike Calvarese and a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Briggs, Michael Piccirillo hit a single to right that plated Calvarese. Three batters later, Barton knocked an RBI single to center field to allow Piccirillo to cross home plate.

Back-to-back home runs by Mears and Chris Seibert started the Wesley fifth. Later in the fifth, Piccirillo smacked a two-run double to left field to score Briggs and Calvarese.

Marymount started cutting into the Wesley lead with runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Wesley however got an important insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Briggs plated Mears on a sacrifice fly to center field to push the Wesley lead to 8-5.

A two-run home run by Marymount's Karlis Graubics made it a one-run game in the top of the ninth inning but Connor Springsteen induced a Connor Hall groundout to shortstop to end the Marymount threat and seal the victory for Wesley.

Cody Simet picked up the win in the start for the Wolverines. Simet only allowed two earned runs in seven solid innings of work for his fifth victory of the season. Springsteen earned his second save out of the bullpen to close out the game.

Mears continued his hot hitting with his sixth home run in as many games for Wesley. Mears and Seibert each tallied three hits and a home run while Mears scored twice and drove in two. Piccirillo knocked in three runs while collecting two hits. Barton and John Joines also recorded a multi-hit game in the win.

The Wolverines (19-13) move on in the winner's bracket of the CAC Tournament and will face the No. 1 seed Salisbury on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
