Dmiterchik, Seibert homer as baseball splits final day of Wilcox Tournament

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Wesley College baseball team split their two games on Sunday in the final day of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament, hosted by Hampden-Sydney College.

The Wolverines opened Sunday with a 9-7 win over the Moravian Greyhounds.

Wesley got up to an early 4-0 lead in the opening frames of the game. Michael Piccirillo led off the second inning with a single and came around to score when Jordan Marucci hit an RBI groundout to the shortstop.

Wesley scored three runs in the third inning. Cody Dmiterchik brought Chris Bramble home on a RBI single. Following a Chris Seibert double that put runners in scoring position, Will Barton scored on a Piccirillo fielder's choice. Seibert then was plated when Jason Boc laid down a suicide squeeze bunt.

Moravian took the 5-4 lead behind a two-run fourth inning and three-run fifth inning. Wesley regained the lead in bottom of the fifth when Piccirillo brought Seibert and Barton home on a two-run single.

Moravian tied the game at six in the sixth inning and took the 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth but Wesley would retake the lead in the bottom of the eighth. RBI singles by Marruci, Barton and Dmiterchik would push Wesley ahead of Moravian 9-7.

Darin Matthews would earn the win in relief of Sam Meck. Mike Sabino would shut down the Greyhound bats in the ninth to pick up his first career save.

Marruci, Dmiterchik, Barton, Seibert and Piccirillo all would register multi-hit games in the win. Piccirillo drove in three runs while Dmiterchik and Marruci would bring in two runs.

Wesley couldn't keep the momentum in the nightcap of the doubleheader, dropping an 8-4 decision to host Hampden-Sydney.

Dmiterchik would put Wesley on the board first when he smashed a home run in the top of the third inning. Hampden-Sydney would answer with two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to take the 4-1 lead.

A Seibert two-run home run would bring Wesley to within a run in the sixth inning. Wesley tied the game at four in the seventh. After a Jarrett Wallace one-out triple, Dmiterchik brought him home on a RBI single.

Hampden-Sydney would get the lead back behind a four-run eighth inning and stymie the Wesley bats in the ninth inning.

Seibert, Barton and Dmiterchik all went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss. Seibert and Dmiterchik both hit their first home runs of the season and drove in two runs.

The Wolverines (1-2) will be back action on Saturday, March 3 when they host the SUNY-Oswego Lakers in a doubleheader. The 2018 home opener is set for a noon first pitch.
