Baseball outlasts St. Mary’s on the road

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Wesley College baseball team clipped the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks, 11-8 on Thursday in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action to split the season series.

Wesley opened the game with a pair of runs. Will Barton led off the game with a single and stole second base. After Cody Dmiterchik moved him over with a sacrifice bunt, Chris Seibert tripled down the right-field line to plate Barton. Seibert later scored when William Foster hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Wesley pushed their lead to five in the third inning. Seibert hit a sacrifice fly to score Barton. Michael Piccirillo hit an RBI single to left center field to score Dmiterchik. With the bases loaded, Piccirillo crossed home when Deshawn Aiken drew a walk. St. Mary's tied the game with three runs in the third and two runs in the fifth.

Foster put Wesley back on top 7-5 in the sixth inning when he smacked a two-run homer. Wesley added two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Jordan Marucci knocked an RBI single to score Seibert from third base. Two batters later, Jarrett Wallace converted a bases-loaded opportunity with a single through the left side of the infield to score Piccirillo. St. Mary's got two runs back in the bottom half of the eighth.

Wesley added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth when Marucci scored Seibert again with his second RBI single in as many innings. A batter later, Chris Bramble scored Wesley's 11th run with an RBI single to score Foster. St. Mary's got a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Cody Simet stifled the St. Mary's comeback to seal the conference win for Wesley.

All nine Wesley batters reached base and eight of the nine registered a hit. Marucci went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Barton, Seibert, Piccirillo, Bramble and Wallace all collected two hits in the win. Foster added a home run with three runs batted in.

Alex Marrs struck out seven batters in eight innings of work.

The Wolverines will return to the friendly confines of Bob Reed Field on Saturday when they host the Southern Virginia Knights in a CAC doubleheader. The first game begins at noon.
