DOVER, Del. - The Wesley Field Hockey team took the field for the last time at Drass Field on Sunday, against St. Mary's College of Maryland. The day started by honoring all 16 players as they gave heart-felt messages to their family, friends and teammates.
From the first whistle the game was played from end to end. Both teams competed hard and gave the crowd a great game. Wesley jumped on the scoreboard first. Daphne Leighty drove past two defenders and crossed the ball to Hanna Giaccone. Giaccone pushed the ball past the St. Mary's keeper. St. Mary's followed with 3 unanswered goals by Emily Pulkowski (assisted by Meghan Ronan), Gabrielle Corder (assisted by Meghan Ronan and Emily Pulkowski) and Meghan Ronan (unassisted.)
Both teams fought for possession with St. Mary's out-shooting the Wolverines 19 (13 on goal) to 8 (4 on goal.) St. Mary's also had the upper hand in corners 12-5. Wesley goalies (Lauren Berry and Katie Porter) combined for 10 saves with St. Mary's turning away 3 shots.
The loss ended the season for the Wolverines. After the game the tributes continued as the current players, led by seniors Lauren Berry, Alexis Howerin and Jessica Behornar, paid tribute to Head Coach Tracey Short and the 3 assistants, Amanda Fisher, Kasey Fry and Emily Voshell.
