#10 Men’s Hoops Edged by CNU in Semifinals

DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's 10th-ranked men's basketball team was edged 59-54 by Christopher Newport in the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals on Thursday night at Wentworth Gymnasium.  The Wolverines fall to 22-3 and will hope to gain an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament while the Captains (19-8) will travel to Mary Washington for the CAC Title Game on Saturday afternoon.

Defense played a major role in the low scoring affair as Wesley narrowly outshot Christopher Newport, 34.7% to 33.3% and the score was tied at 20 at the half.  The Captains did force 20 Wolverines turnovers which translated into 15 points and outrebounded Wesley, 42-34, with 16 second chance points.

Tied at 38, CNU's Tra Benefield (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Connor Laframboise (13 points) hit back-to-back threes and Benefield also putback a missed layup by Tim Daly to cap an 8-0 run putting the Captains up 46-38 with 6:40 remaining. After extending the lead to as many as nine points with 2:54 left, CNU made 8-of-11 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

Three Wolverines scored in double figures, led by Anthony Bowers' 14.  David Langan added 13 points and Brandin Youngblood chipped in with 10.

Mike Cherry scored a game-high 17 points for the Captains.
