Men’s Hoops Falls Just Short in CAC 1st Round at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – All five starters scored in double figures but the Wesley College men's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport, 87-81, in the 1st Round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament late Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.  The Wolverines finish the season with a 12-14 overall record.

Juniors AJ Tilghman and Wayne Lennon each tallied 17 points to lead Wesley, who actually made four more field goals than the Captains but was outshot 52.8% to 43.8% and made just four shots from downtown compared to 13 for Christopher Newport.  The Wolverines also got 14 points from JW Lawson and 11 from Anthony Bowers while Quincy Pettiford notched a double-double 12 points and ten rebounds in his final collegiate game.
 

Wesley actually held a brief four point lead late in the first half but Christopher Newport quickly evened the score and outscored the Wolverines 12-6 over the final three-plus minutes of the period to take a 42-36 advantage into the half.

Lawson started the second half with a jumper but five-straight Captains points gave them its largest lead at 47-38 with 18:24 in regulation.  Wesley regrouped and Bowers hit a jumper followed by back-to-back triples by Lennon to make it a one-possession game with 16:30 left.
 

Christopher Newport answered the mini-run with one of its own and extended the lead back to 78-70 with 5:50 left in regulation.  However, Wesley scored nine-straight points and with a jumper by Lennon with 2:18 remaining, the Wolverines went back on top 79-78.

Aaron McFarland then answered with a triple for the Captains which Bowers matched to tie the score at 81 with 1:45 left but CNU scored six-straight points to close out the game for the win.
