Scranton, PA – The Wolverines narrowly secured their victory over Marywood on Saturday 84-80. The team used their free throw attempts in the final seconds of the game to escape Marywood's comeback attempt.
Despite Marywood's strong offensive start to the first half, Wesley's Mychal Stefanides sank a go-ahead three-pointer at 12:51 giving the Wolverines a 14-11 lead. Their nine-point scoring run after helped put some distance between them and the Pacers. Marywood's offense didn't let off the gas pedal, however, and came within two points of the Wolverines 32-30 at the half.
In the second half, Wesley's offense stormed the court when they led the Pacers 46-35 at 16:08. The Men's team would lead the Pacers for nearly the rest of the half until Marywood suddenly bounced back and came within just one point of Wesley 74-73 with 1:19 left to go. Marywood would go on to use their fouling strategy to try and get the ball back from the Wolverines.
The Wolverines used this technique to their advantage, however, sinking 10 free throws to outscore Marywood and thwart their attempts to secure the lead. They would go on to win the nail biter and get their ninth conference win on the season.
Brian Cameron led in scoring with 27 points and his nine rebounds nearly landed him a double-double. He sank all 10 of his free throw attempts in his efforts to help the Wolverines secure the win. Last month Cameron earned his way onto the top 100 Bevo Francis players to watch List and this month he advanced to the Top 50 list.
Stefanides had 22 points while grabbing six rebounds and sinking seven of nine of his free throws.
Michael McCants scored 16 points with eight rebounds. His six made free throws also helped Wesley distance themselves from the Pacers.
The Men's team will come back home for Senior Night in another conference game against Cabrini Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
