SMYRNA, Del. – Freshman Luis Arteaga led the Wesley College men's cross country team in the Wolverines season opener at the DSU Hornet Invitational on Saturday morning. Wesley finished fourth of five schools, defeating Delaware State and falling just behind Morgan State.
Running in his first cross country race at any level, Arteaga placed 11th of 34 runners, completing the four-mile course in 21:49. Finishing just behind him was Carlton Sheppard, who finished in 22:17.3, 27 seconds faster than his time at the same course a year ago.
Sophomore Darryl Burks made his Wolverines debut after transferring from Coffeyville (Kans.) Community College and crossed the finish in 23:11.1, just 1.9 seconds in front of freshman Ja'mier Bailey (23:13) who was also running in his first-ever cross country race.
First-year runner Jeff Koletsky rounded out the top five for Wesley and covered the course in 24:06.3. Also competing for the Wolverines were sophomore Adeola James (24:23.7), freshman Ben Miller (25:35.2) and freshman Malik Johnson (27:14.6). James shaved nearly 30 seconds off his time from the same course a year ago as well.
Wesley returns to action on Saturday, September 20 at the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational held at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pa.
