Softball 2006 Season Preview
DOVER, De. - As spring nears and softball weather takes over our winter chill, the Wesley College Softball Team begins its efforts to improve on last years' 17-22 record.  The team returns eight players from the 2005 team that gained valuable experience through the 39 games, and first round playoff game.

Leading the Wolverines will be senior 3-time starter Angela Boone (Ellicott City, MD/ Mt. Hebron) playing second base.  "Ang is a very versatile player.  Her athletic ability has allowed us to use her at third, short and second.  We will also look to Ang to lead us with her bat and her quickness on the bases."  Three other seniors will look to contribute at new positions as Erika Leich (Bronx, NY/ Preston) will play some at third and possibly catcher; Mary O'Donnell (Novato, CA/ Marin Catholic) will see some time in the outfield; and Allison Houdek (Wyoming, DE/ Caesar Rodney), currently injured, will look to serve as DH.

Joining the seniors with many innings of experience will be four sophomores, Kelly Caton, Jessica Morgan, Marie Elzey and Amber Vanderwende.  Caton (Eastampton, NJ/ Rancocas Valley) will start for the second season in center field.  Morgan (Newark, DE/ St. Mark's) will fill both spots in the battery as she will be the primary catcher except when she is on the mound.  "Jess and Kelly led the team in hitting last year as freshmen - each having at least 39 hits and batting above .330 for the season.  We hope they have another successful year at the plate.)  Another returning pitcher, Elzey (Cambridge, MD/ Cambridge-South Dorchester) will see time on the mound and in the outfield.  And our last sophomore, Vanderwende (Greenwood, DE/ Sussex Tech) should hold down first base.  "The sophomore class returns four very good players.  I look to their class to lead us in many categories."

Starting their collegiate careers will be eight very talented freshmen.  "The freshman class is super.  They are skilled, talented and versatile.  I look for our youth to help us in the long run - we may have some bumps in the road at the beginning but come mid-season we should be rolling."  Possible starters from the freshman class include Lara Krygier (Middletown, DE/ Red Lion) at shortstop; Mandy Ellingsworth (Bear, DE/ Hodgson) in the outfield; and Mallory Hall (Crisfield, MD/ Crisfield) at designated hitter or first base.  Looking to add depth on the mound will be Tamara Johnson (Millsboro, DE/ Epworth Christian) and Nicole Murtaugh (Westville, NJ/ Gateway Regional).  Splitting time behind the plate and at third will be Nicole Courtemanche (Glastonbury, CT/ Glastonbury).  Joining the team after basketball, Domonique Barrett and Pabnesia Zachery (both of Dover, DE/ Dover) will add depth at the outfield and first base respectfully.
