NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Wesley College Softball team traveled down the coast to Newport News to take on Christopher Newport, but fell to the Captains in both contests, 8-1 and 10-2.
Nina Marcano finished with three hits, a run scored and an RBI while Ashley Royer registered two hits including a two-run home run in game two that provided the Wolverines' only two runs. Lindsay Siok took the loss in game one, tossing 5.2 innings before Destiny Davis recorded the team's final out. Davis then started game two and took the loss. Sydney Botsch finished out game two from the rubber, tossing 3.2 innings.
The Wolverines fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, but then held the Captains scoreless until the sixth. In the top of the sixth inning, Megan DiRubbio led off with a single and stole second. Samantha Burns followed by reaching on an error and Breanna Hartman moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. An infield single by Marcano scored DiRubbio, and Royer followed with a single to left that looked like it might have scored Burns to tie the game, but she was thrown out at the plate to end the rally.
The Captains responded with a big inning in the bottom of the frame, using the longball to take the lead. Christopher Newport ripped a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to bring in six runs, taking an 8-1 lead. Wesley was retired in order in their final at-bat.
In game two, Wesley opened the game with a 2-0 lead. Nina Marcano pushed a two-run single through the left side and Royer followed with a two-run blast over the left field wall to give the Navy and White an edge in the first frame.
The lead did not last long though, as the Captains responded with six runs in the bottom of the first. Wesley managed just three more hits throughout the rest of the game as Christopher Newport tacked on two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. They closed out Wesley in the fifth to earn the victory on the run rule.
Wesley moves to 12-16 on the season with a 5-9 mark in conference play. The team will return to action on Monday, April 18 when they play host to Penn State Abington.
