Marcano ties hits record at Penn St.-Abington

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Wesley College softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the Penn St.-Abington Lions on Tuesday.

Casey Beall drove in the lone Wesley run as the Wolverines fell 9-1 to the Lions in the opener of the doubleheader.

Karina Cardona led off the fourth inning with a double to center field. Brooke Retkowski then moved her to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Beall followed with a RBI base hit to right field.

Beall, Lindsay Siok and Nina Marcano each went 2-for-3 in the opener.

Marcano tied the Wesley career hits record in the finale of the double-dip as Penn St.-Abington came back in the sixth to down Wesley, 10-8.

Wesley scored two runs in the first inning off of a Devin Mackay two-run double to left field that plated Marcano and Samantha Burns.

Penn St.-Abington responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and four runs in the third.

Wesley then proceeded to put up six runs in the top of the fourth. After Wesley loaded the bases with no outs, Lily Engel smacked a single to center field to plate Retkowski. Burns followed with a RBI single down the left field line to bring home Beall. Two batters later, Marcano cleared the bases with a grand slam over the center field wall.

Wesley couldn't hold the lead as Penn St.-Abington pushed across a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to seal the win.

Burns went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a RBI. Mackay went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Marcano brought home four runs on her grand slam and scored twice.

The Wolverines (17-15) will start an important two-day conference swing on Friday when they head up to Middletown, Pa. to face the Penn St.-Harrisburg Lions in doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
