Softball splits doubleheader with Stevenson

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball team picked up a doubleheader split on Sunday with the Stevenson Mustangs.

Wesley run-ruled Stevenson en route to a 13-5 win in six innings in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

Wesley and Stevenson traded runs in the first two innings. After Stevenson took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Brandi Dalious tied the game with a single through the left side to score Bianca Newsom.

Stevenson regained the lead 2-1 in the second before a bases-loaded walk by Megan DiRubbio plated Miranda Kinney in the bottom half of the second to tie the game at two.

Kinney gave Wesley the 3-2 lead in the third with an RBI single that scored Ashley Royer from third.

Stevenson took the 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning before Wesley pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth to regain the one-run lead. Newsom came around to score on a throwing error by the Stevenson pitcher to tie the game at four. Dalious then allowed DiRubbio to score with a bloop single to the edge of the infield.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth. After Stevenson tied the game at five, Wesley took the 6-5 lead when Brooke Retkowski scored on a DiRubbio single through the right side.

Wesley batted around in the bottom of the sixth inning to invoke the run rule. Karina Cardona knocked a two-run single up the middle to score Royer and Lauren Hoffman to open the scoring. After a Kinney triple to right center, Retkowski singled to left field to plate Kinney. Following a DiRubbio walk to load the bases with one out, Dalious drew a walk to score Amanda Curry. Royer notched a single through the right side to allow Newsom to score. Hoffman hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored DiRubbio to end the game.

Miranda Kinney and Bianca Newsom both went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Newsom scored three runs while Kinney scored twice and knocked her first collegiate triple. Brandi Dalious went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Megan DiRubbio and Ashley Royer both had two-hit days. DiRubbio and Karina Cardona both drove in two runs.

Abbey Mayse notched her first collegiate victory in two innings of relief for Dori Loukopoulos.

Wesley couldn't get the bats going in the second game, falling 8-2 to Stevenson.

Wesley gained the opening run of the game when Royer plated DiRubbio from second base with an RBI single to right field.

Stevenson scored four unanswered runs to stretch the lead to 4-1 heading into the fifth. DiRubbio brought Amanda Curry home on an RBI groundout to cut the Stevenson lead to 4-2 at the end of the fifth.

Stevenson pushed four runs across in the sixth, including a three-run home run by Tiffany McKee to take the 8-2 win over Wesley.

Amanda Curry, Ashley Royer and Megan DiRubbio all went 2-for-3 in the nightcap while Royer and DiRubbio each notched an RBI.

The Wolverines (3-2) will be back in action Sunday, March 11 when they begin the week-long Fast Pitch Breams Classic in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Wolverines open with the St. Joseph (Conn.) Blue Jays at 1:30 on March 11.
