DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball team split a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader with the Penn St.-Harrisburg Lions on Friday.
Wesley couldn't scratch a run across in the first game of the doubleheader, falling 3-0 to the Lions.
Prior to the game, the Wolverines honored their lone senior Lauren Hoffman. Her senior campaign was cut short with an injury earlier in the season, but she was able to lead off the game for Wesley with a bunt single before being taken out of the game.
Abbey Mayse scattered four hits and three unearned runs in a complete-game effort.
Wesley and Penn St.-Harrisburg battled in another pitcher's duel with Wesley pulling through in the bottom of the eighth inning to walk-off 1-0 winners in the nightcap.
Wesley recorded 11 hits in the game but were able to sustain a rally in the eighth inning. Karina Cardona opened the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff double to left-center field. Miranda Kinney moved Cardona over with a sacrifice bunt. Brooke Retkowski came through with a walk-off single to left field to plate Cardona and give Wesley the win.
Loukopoulos pitched her fourth shutout of the season. She only allowed four hits and left 11 Penn St.-Harrisburg batters on base.
Cardona went 3-for-4 while DiRubbio and Royer each went 2-for-4 in the game. Kinney chipped in with a 2-for-3 effort in the win.
The Wolverines (13-15-2, 3-8-1 CAC) continue their homestand tomorrow when they host the York (Pa.) Spartans. The CAC doubleheader from DuPont Field will begin at 1 p.m.
