Softball splits home doubleheader with Widener

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball team split in a doubleheader on Tuesday with the Widener Pride.

Game 1 – Wesley 7, Widener 1

Jessica Anderson spun a gem in game one of the doubleheader to help Wesley pick up the 7-1 win over Widener. Anderson had a no-hitter going through four innings before Widener would get their first hit of the game in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Ariel Silva. Anderson struck out seven while walking three and only giving up four hits and the lone run.

Ashley Royer was a home run away from hitting for the cycle in the opener. She went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in the first, single in the second and leadoff triple in the fourth. Royer scored twice in the victory.

After Royer knocked home Megan DiRubbio in the first, Amanda Curry drew a bases-loaded walk to double Wesley's lead to 2-0.

Anderson helped her own cause in the third inning with an RBI single to center field to plate Kelly Palmer from third base. Two batters later, DiRubbio would score Brooke Retkowski from third base on an RBI groundout to give Wesley the 4-0 lead in the third inning.

Miranda Kinney brought Royer home in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right field to push Wesley's lead to 5-0.

Wesley responded to Widener's run in the fifth with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the fifth on a two-run double to right center field by Karina Cardona.

Game 2 – Widener 8, Wesley 4 (6 inn.)

Wesley found themselves trailing Widener 8-0 after three and a half innings before starting to rally back for two runs in the fourth and sixth. The setting sun decided to stall Wesley's momentum as the game was called after six innings due to darkness.

Ashley Royer was the catalyst for Wesley's comeback efforts in game two with a two-run shot in the fourth over the left field fence for Wesley's first runs of the game and cut into the Widener lead, 8-2. Royer would reach on a single up to middle to lead off the sixth before Dori Loukopoulos would double to right center to put runners in scoring position. Miranda Kinney plated Royer with an RBI groundout. Brooke Retkowski would follow with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Loukopoulos from third base.

Royer went 5-for-8 on the day with the full-day cycle, six runs scored and three runs batted in. Loukopulos tallied four hits and three runs scored while Cardona drove in four runs in the doubleheader.
