Pitching dominates in doubleheader sweep over PSU-Abington

DOVER, Del. – Back-to-back two-hitters highlight the Wesley College softball team's doubleheader sweep over the Penn St. Abington Lions on Saturday.

Game 1 – Wesley 3, PSU-Abington 0

Jessica Anderson shut down the Lion bats to the tune of nine strikeouts, three batters over the minimum with a hit batter and two scattered hits for her first collegiate shutout. PSU-Abington got their first hit off of Anderson with a bunt single by Mary Kate Smith with two outs in the top of the third inning.

Wesley was able to get two runs across in the bottom of the second for their first runs of the ballgame. Miranda Kinney led off the second with a triple to right field. A batter later, Brooke Retkowski drove her in with an RBI single to center field. Bianca Newsom brought Retkowski around to score on a squeeze bunt that she was able to reach on.

Dori Loukopoulos knocked a two-out single through the left side to plate Megan DiRubbio from second base in the bottom of the fifth to provide some added insurance for Anderson.

Megan DiRubbio and Kelly Palmer both went 2-for-3 in the game.

Game 2 – Wesley 4, PSU-Abington 1

Dori Loukopoulos and Abbey Mayse were able to continue the momentum in the circle from Anderson in the first game to pitch a combined two-hitter for Wesley. Loukopoulos only gave up a hit and run with five scattered walks and five punchouts. Mayse finished out the game for Loukopoulos in the seventh inning to earn her first save of the season.

PSU-Abington scored the opening run of the game in the first inning, but Wesley responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first when Karina Cardona smacked a two-run double to right to plate Palmer and Loukopoulos to give Wesley the 2-1 lead after the first frame.

After Kinney got on with two-out single and Alexis Howerin stole her way to third base, Retkowski notched an RBI single to double Wesley's lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning. Palmer took advantage of a throwing error on an Ashley Royer bunt to score from second base in the fifth inning.

PSU-Abington got the tying run to the plate with one out in the seventh inning. Mayse was able to get out of the inning and pick up the save when she got Stephanie Andreoli to pop out to the pitcher and then sit-down Sam Friend on strikes to lock up the win for Wesley.

All nine Wesley batters reached base while eight of the nine Wesley batters collected a hit. Bianca Newsom tallied a pair of hits with an infield double in the ninth spot. Kelly Palmer scored twice in the win.
