Dover, Del. – A late Wesley rally wasn't enough to come back from the nine-run deficit Swarthmore piled on in the first three innings on Sunday. The Wolverines dropped game one 10-8 as their bats got heated too late in the game.
Swarthmore's three runs in the first two innings put Wesley at a 3-0 disadvantage. By the third inning, Swarthmore extended their lead to 9-0 with an explosive six run inning which seemed almost impossible for the Wolverines to come back from.
In the very next inning, Wesley's bats responded by putting up four runs on Julianna Ceron's RBI fielder's choice and Carly Endres' booming three-run triple. The duo brought the Wolverines within a manageable five runs of Swarthmore's lead at 9-4.
In response to a Garnet solo homerun in the top of the 6th, Endres lasered a two-run bomb over the fence to bring the score to 10-6. Kaitlyn Delaney's two-run homer in the 7th gave Wesley hope with just one out. The team couldn't continue to feed the fire as the Garnet found its final two outs soon after to stop the bleeding and secure the victory over Wesley.
Starting pitcher Dori Loukopoulos had a forgettable outing as she allowed seven earned runs on eight Garnet hits with just one strikeout. Jessica Anderson helped control the game after, giving up just one earned run with three strikeouts over three innings pitched.
Endres became a scoring machine for Wesley, batting in five RBI's on two hits including a homerun. Delaney went 2-4 with a homerun during the loss.
The Softball team looked to be in the driver's seat during the first half of game 2, but the Garnet rallied back later to steal the lead from Wesley, 9-8. The Wolverines move to a 3-3 season record after being swept today at home.
Wesley answered the Garnets' run in the top of the first with two runs of their own off of a Swarthmore error and Karina Cardona's RBI single to make the score 2-1 at the end of the 1st inning.
Despite Swarthmore's three-run 4th inning, Wesley answered with a four spot on four hits. Miranda Kinney got the big inning started with an infield single. After the team filled all three bases with runners, Amanda Curry was struck by a pitch, scoring Brooke Retkowski from third base. With the bases still loaded, Brandi Dalious lined a three-run double to the left center gap, stealing the lead back 6-4.
After Swarthmore scored three total runs in the 5th and 6th innings, Amanda Curry hit a clutch two-run home run to snatch the lead back from the Garnet 8-7. Unfortunately, Wesley gave up two more runs in the 7th and were not able to respond, resulting in a heartbreaking 9-8 defeat.
Brandi Dalious went 3-4 on the day with three RBI's and two doubles. She also drew a walk and earned 11 putouts on defense.
Amanda Curry's three RBI's and home run helped Wesley stay close in score with Swarthmore. She also walked once and scored two crucial runs.
The Softball team will try to get some wins over Spring Break in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina March 1st through March 6th. The Wolverines will then return home to square off against Stevenson Wednesday March 11th on Faculty/Staff Appreciation day. Game one will begin at 3 p.m. while game two is scheduled for 5 p.m.
