DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College softball team defeated the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in Atlantic East action today 8-0 and 7-6.
In game one of the day, only six innings were needed for the Wolverines to put the run rule into effect off of a 16 hit performances four off the bat of senior shortstop Bianca Newsom. Newsom also swiped three bags and contributed a double in the effort. Fellow senior pitcher Dori Loukopoulos threw the complete game shut out striking out 8 and limiting the griffins to just three hits. She also helped herself on the offensive side of the ball going 2 for 4 with three RBI's.
Game two was a back and forth battle that ultimately came down to a seventh inning showdown where the Wolverines put two runners across the plate scratching out a victory. Senior pitcher Abbey Mayse was credit the win after going 1.2 innings and contributing the game tying rbi at the plate. Mayse put the ball in play with one out in the seventh allowing freshman first baseman Rachel Martinez to cross the plate tying the game. Then with junior Gab Monzo at third base after taking a walk and stealing second, advancing on the Mayse fielders choice , Senior right fielder Miranda Kinney punched a single through to left field scoring Monzo and securing the win.
The Wolverines take a 10 day break from play as the Marywood series is on hold. The Wolverines return to action on April 30th in another double dip vs. the Griffins.
