Women’s Hoops Drops Heartbreaker to Marymount (Va.)

DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Capital Athletic Conference rival Marymount (Va.), 54-53 on Wednesday night at Wentworth Gymnasium.  The Wolverines now stand at 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the CAC while the Saints move to 5-1 on the year and 2-0 in league play.

Brionna Johnson made a jumper off a pass from Roniece Williams with 35 seconds remaining, pulling Wesley to within one at 54-53.  Marymount then missed back-to-back free throws, giving the Wolverines the opportunity to win in the final seconds but Marymount forced a turnover to walk away with the victory.

Wesley needed to overcome an 11 point deficit to have a chance to pull off the upset.

Johnson finished with her sixth-straight double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Alexus Stroud came off the bench to score 13 points including three triples.  Williams dished out a career-high nine assists to go with seven points.

Five Saints scored in double figures and Marymount held a 47-33 advantage on the boards and made 12-of-17 free throws compared to just 5-of-7 for Wesley. Both squads made 21 field goals on the day with Wesley attempting just one more field goal (59) than the Saints.

The Wolverines travel to Southern Virginia at 1 pm on Saturday, December 6.
