Wolverines Fall Short against Mary Washington

DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College volleyball team looked poised to take the first set away from Mary Washington on Friday night at Wentworth Gym, but instead dropped a close first set and went on to fall 3-0 to the Eagles.

Both teams were swinging well in the initial set as they combined for 26 kills and just seven errors. Mary Washington hit at a .444 rate while Wesley recoreded a .350 hitting percentage in the first set.

The Wolverines led the first set by as many as four points. Samantha Weber served the team into a 16-12 lead, but the Eagles came storming back to tie the match at 20-20. The visitors won five of the next seven points to close out the first set with a 25-22 win.

After taking the tough first set loss, the Navy and White didn't seem to have the same energy in the second and third sets. Wesley fell in both, dropping the second 25-16 and the third 25-14.

Tania Rounds led the Wolverines with 7 kills and did so on only 12 swings. Tionne Graves-Brown added five kills and led the way with eight digs. Beth Schlecker recorded 20 assists for the Wolverines. Four different Wesley servers recorded an ace on the evening as well.

Rachel Hendricks finished with 17 kills on the night for Mary Washington, while Emma Olson recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 10 digs, and 23 assists.

Wesley will return to action on Saturday when they play host to John Jay College in a non-conference battle with the Bloodhounds.
