Stellar Efforts Bring Volleyball to Five Sets but the Wolverines Fall Short, 3-2

Dover, Del. – The Wolverines (12-10, 0-1) opened conference play Wednesday night in Wentworth Gym against the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins. The match went five full sets and though the Wolverines showed incredible effort, they fell short of the win, 3-2.

Set scores for the Wolverines were 17-25, 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 10-15

Tight scoring for the first set and good defensive play only did so much for the Wolverines as they dropped the first set to the Griffins 17-25.

The second set was a breeze for the Wolverines as they took the win 25-15. The winning continued as the women won the next set 25-21 to head into a fourth set.

The fourth set didn't pan out the way the Wolverines would have liked even though they had held a 10-point lead for a good portion of the fourth set. The Griffins offense came into play late in the set, which allowed them to take the set win, 23-25.

Heading into the fifth and final set with a lot of back and forth play and close scores but the Wolverines fell short just five points 10-15 and the Griffins took the match win 3-2.

Defensively, Wesley had 139 digs in five sets, Emily Waldridge led with 35, very close behind was Lindsay Burg with 34 and Caelli Clifford contributing 27.

Emily Waldridge also led the offense with 16 kills. Trailing behind Waldridge was Mary Getty with 12 and Regan Healey with 11.

The Wolverines hit .109 to the Griffins .133.

Lindsay Burg had 38 assists to help fuel the offense.
